In 'The Witch (from Myths)', Andy Warhol blurs the line between actress and character, reality and fiction, to capture a modern American myth. Before Elphaba, there was Margaret Hamilton’s equally viridescent Wicked Witch of the West opposite Judy Garland in 1939’s The Wizard of Oz. Andy Warhol met Hamilton in 1980 and later invited her to his studio. Painted from the images taken on that studio visit, this is both a portrait of the classic character from 1939 and a portrait of Hamilton in 1980. Swipe to see his process.
