Basquiat details đź‘‘
One of the tricky things about drawing is trying to breathe life into your work. Even after 8 years of a daily drawing habit, I am still not able to put into words what it takes to do so, but I do know it when it is missing.
When taking on drawing Jean-Michel Basquiat, I initially struggled with getting the right expression into the artwork. Drawing a direct likeness just didn’t feel right, so I decided to take a risk and to try something a little different!
Instead of starting with a blank canvas, I chose to go for something more bold and colorful like many of Basquiat’s works. I still did a full “standard” black and white portrait on top, but I took a big risk drawing on top of it and trying to incorporate some of his flare into the portrait. After a bit of trial and error I started loving the drawing more and more until I came out with a full piece that felt full of life and intentionality.
I am very proud of this drawing and the challenges I had to face ...
