#DidYouKnow I had a living symbol?! In 1950, firefighters were battling a human-caused wildfire in the Capitan Mountains of New Mexico when they found and rescued an injured bear cub. They decided to name him Smokey Bear, after my iconic PSAs. When he recovered, he was transported to the Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute in Washington, DC, where he lived for nearly 30 years as one of the most popular exhibits. Eventually, he was laid to rest back in his home of Capitan, in what is now known as Smokey Bear Historical Park. 📷 cosmicsaurstudio #SmokeyBear80
