š§ This footage from U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) shows the Mendenhall Glacier in Alaska forming a natural ice dam. As meltwater builds up and suddenly releases, it triggers a glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF).
For three years in a row, Juneau (Alaska) has faced unprecedented August flooding linked to this process. In 2024, record-breaking floods impacted more than 300 homes.š
The story of the Mendenhall Glacier is not unique. Around the world, rising temperatures are making cryosphere-related hazards like GLOFs more frequent, with cascading risks of floods and landslides that threaten communities and infrastructure in high-mountain and sub-Arctic regions.
As part of
#Glaciers2025, this is a stark reminder: the cryosphere is changing, and with it, the risks we face.
