This weekend at the Head of the Charles—a 3-day rowing competition held in Cambridge, MA—one boat will be solely made up of men and women over 80 years old. HBS alum and Olympic gold winner Bill Becklean will be coxing the boat of octogenarians. Bill won his Olympic gold at the 1956 summer Olympics in Melbourne, Australia, as an undergraduate at Yale. He graduated with an electrical engineering degree in 1958 and spent the next eight years in the Navy, where he worked on nuclear subs. He headed to Harvard Business School where he was introduced to the Head of the Charles regatta, then in its second year. He began volunteering and then competing at the regatta, and joined the Cambridge Boat Club, where he has been a member for more than 50 years. The all-80s crew this year is made up of 15 rowers, with Bill in the coxswain’s seat.
