When asked in a 2019 Reddit AMA if being a billionaire made him happier, Bill Gates didn’t hesitate: “Yes. I don’t have to think about health costs or college costs.” But he added, “You don’t need a billion to get to that point.” The real blessing, he explained, is freedom from financial worry. ㅤ That kind of freedom is rare. As of late 2023, 62% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck — even many earning over $100K. Money stress is widespread: 72% of adults feel it regularly, and 27% have skipped medical treatment due to cost. ㅤ Gates acknowledged the need to lower healthcare and education costs so more people can live without constant anxiety. Beyond wealth, he credits his happiness to staying fit, spending time with family, and seeing his kids thrive. ㅤ So, is being rich better? Gates says yes. But necessary for happiness? Not at all. What really matters is financial peace of mind.
