After her daughter Elodie was stillborn, Stephanie Lee found that talking about her loss with her parents was difficult. Her mother, who is Korean, said. “마음에 담아” — “Store it, bury it in your heart.” It was meant to be comforting, but Stephanie said it was hard to hear. She didn’t want to forget about her Elodie. She wanted to keep her present in their lives. Stillbirth is hard for many families to talk about. It can get even harder when dealing with cultural and generation gaps. But Stephanie and her husband, Tunaidi Ansari, who is Chinese American, said that over time, they found common ground with their parents. October is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month, meant to recognize the losses so many families experience. There are more than 20,000 stillbirths in the U.S. each year, and hundreds of thousands of miscarriages and other pregnancy losses. At least a quarter of stillbirths are likely preventable. Stephanie shares more about her family in ProPublica’s new documentary...
