Founded in Oakland on this day in 1966, the Black Panther Party sparked a powerful movement for racial justice. Taken two years later, Blair Stapp’s photograph of Huey Newton in a rattan throne chair became one of the defining images of the Party. Our Research Library holds the original Black Panther Party promotional poster that first circulated this image. Library Director David Senior shares insight into its history and impact.
See it on Floor 2 in “People Make This Place: SFAI Stories,” alongside other moving images of the Party’s history and impact.
