In 2018, scientific research found that those with higher IQs tend to swear more, stay up late, and often leave their work desks messy. Research published by the Language Sciences journal revealed that people who tend to swear more may have a larger vocabulary than those who avoid profanities. Popular belief assumes that those who frequently use swear words only do so because they cannot express themselves in any other way.⁠ The study's authors, Kristin and Timothy Jay, found that the reverse may be true.⁠ ⁠ Participants were tested on their vocabulary using a short word test. Those who recorded the most swear words in a minute also tended to have more verbal fluency and higher associated IQ scores.
