🏠 This Westerville home was an Underground Railroad safehouse Built in 1846, the Hanby House was home to Bishop William Hanby, his wife Ann, and their family. William, a fierce abolitionist, had already operated safehouses in Rushville and Circleville. He was a Bishop in the Church of the United Brethren in Christ, and notably, a co-founder of Otterbein University. Their oldest son, Benjamin, composed more than 80 songs, including the Christmas song “Up on the Housetop”. Like his father, he was also an abolitionist and preacher. The Hanby House has been moved twice (just a block from its original location). You can still tour the historic home, furnished to reflect 1850s life, thanks to the Westerville Historical Society and ohiohistory Connection. 📍 The Hanby House, at 160 W.
