Now Open: ‘Theaster Gates: Unto Thee’ at the Smart Museum⁠ ⁠ Rooted in histories of sculpture, institutional critique, and relational aesthetics, ‘Unto Thee’ underscores Gates' unassailable belief in the power of objects and materials to convey social memory and forge new systems of collective value.⁠ ⁠ ‘Unto Thee’ transfigures several materials and archives central to Theaster's artistic practice, many of which were acquired from the University of Chicago, where Gates has served as Professor of Visual Arts for over a decade.⁠ ⁠ The exhibition is accompanied by a site-specific installation, composed of some of the most recent collections stewarded by Gates including the inaugural presentation of the Muguette and Lucien Guenneguez Collection of African Art alongside the Dinh Nguyen music collection, as part of the Museum’s Threshold Lobby Series, which will be on view through July 2026.⁠ ⁠ 📍 ‘Theaster Gates: Unto Thee’ is on view at Smart Museum of Art (smartmuseum ), The University of...
