I am really excited to have photographed some great nesting behaviour from wild palm cockatoos in the remote woodland on the #SteveIrwinWildlifeReserve. This iconic bird is a very rare and vulnerable species - and sadly new research has indicated that their already dwindling numbers are likely to halve in the next 50 years mostly due to habitat loss. These guys are swiftly heading toward critically low numbers. Being that they only lay one egg at a time in their nest hollows, seeing this female tending to a perfect nesting site is really encouraging. Our reserve is a 335,000 acre area of protected land and acts as one of the last palm cockatoo strongholds on earth.
