More than a dozen people were arrested in a drugs bust mistaken for an ICE raid at the iconic LGBTQ+ venue The Abbey in West Hollywood over the weekend. In a statement posted to X, the LA County Sheriffs department said that they had conducted a ‘scheduled undercover operation’ on Friday night (October 17) in West Hollywood’s Rainbow District in response to ‘reports of pickpocketing and other criminal activity’. They added: ‘Some community members have expressed concern that the operation was confucted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). This is not the case: ICE was not involved’. The Abbey in West Hollywood began in 1991 as a coffeehouse opened by David Cooley, who sought to create a safe space for the gay community.
