Anthony Boyle, in discussing ‘House of Guinness’ with Variety, emphasised the importance of historical queer representation.
It’s widely believed Arthur Guinness was gay which ‘House of Guinness’ doesn’t shy away from. “It’s not like we were going to just say he was gay. There’s so many things that alluded to him being gay,” Boyle said.
In the show, Arthur agrees to a “lavender marriage” for political reasons, but Boyle says that decision doesn’t negate his orientation. Rather, it reflects the compromises queer people have historically made to survive in public life. “If we don’t follow these clues, then we erase gay people from history,” Boyle added.
