New habitat unlocked🔓for salmon, steelhead, and lamprey in the Klamath River Basin.
Last fall, after the removal of the Klamath River dams, Chinook and Coho salmon immediately returned to Jenny Creek, a tributary just upstream of the former site of the Iron Gate Dam, but this small dam continued to block passage to about 1 mile of important spawning and rearing habitat.
Recently, TU teamed up with CDFW, RES, USFWS, the Shasta Indian Nation, The Yurok Tribe, and NOAA to remove this old, obsolete concrete dam to restore passage on Jenny Creek. CDFW staff set the explosives and, after a ten-second countdown, the blast echoed down the canyon and the fish barrier was gone. Crews from RES and The Yurok Tribe removed rubble and rebar from the site, and passage has successfully been restored through the reach.
Salmon are now arriving in Jenny Creek and will have even more habitat to utilize this year and in the years to come.
