🦙 Guanacos—Chile's largest land mammal and a wild relative of the Llama—are playing a key role in rewilding the country's Central Andes mountains. Once numbering in the tens of millions throughout South America, just 300 Guanacos remain in this region today. ⛰ Re:wild partner rewildingchile, an offspring organization of Tompkins_Conservation, has relocated 16 Guanacos to three nature sanctuaries, marking the start of conservation breeding centers that will lead to their subsequent release. A diverse coalition is leading this initiative, which is part of a long-term public-private program to repopulate Guanacos in the Central Andes.
