Some 525,000 Tennesseans , or a little more than 7% of the state’s population, receive health care subsidies. The tax credits are set to expire at the end of the year. Congress has failed to agree on funding legislation required to finance the federal government. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., has said that without a permanent extension of subsidies, Senate Democrats will not vote to pass a temporary budget to reopen the government.
