LIONS SWEEP WINDWARD IN POSTSEASON OPENER: The jserra.girlsvb team kicked off the CIF-SS Division 2 playoffs in winning fashion on Tuesday, as the Lions swept the Windward Wildcats 25-17, 25-16, 25-16 in a first-round match at JSerra Catholic High School.
JSerra is now 18-14 overall and will head to Thousand Oaks on Thursday for a second-round match against the Lancers, who defeated Sage Hill in four sets in their opening round contest.
It was a tough start to the match for the Lions, who saw junior outside hitter Makayla Ziegler depart after only three points with an ankle injury.
The Lions and Wildcats were tied 9-9 early in the first set, but two kills and a block from junior Katherine Nowak, a kill and an ace from junior Layla Graham, and two blocks from senior Catherine Beadles helped the Lions surge to an eight-point advantage that they would maintain, with the set ending on a kill by senior Charlotte Nowak.
