Story time: several years ago, my 8th grade students did a project where they highlighted an issue in the media. I’ll never forget the boy who read his essay to the class about toxic diet culture and the way he saw it impact his mom. She jumped from fad diet to fad diet, and never seemed satisfied- he shared that it hurt him to see how she couldn’t view herself as beautiful and as perfect as he did 😭 As a mom to an infant son at the time, I vowed to never let myself become an almond mom. I’ve had to work through my own food issues and habits, and try to be mindful of how that comes up around the boys, especially with new year diet resolutions that are soon to be trending. It would be naive to assume that boys are not impacted by body image and a relationship with food.
