Gov. Gavin Newsom issued a statement Monday that CalFresh benefits will likely be delayed for the month of November as a result of the federal government shutdown. CalFresh provides low-income families and individuals with monthly benefits that can be spent at most grocery stores, according to its website. The federal government has ordered “a hold” on CalFresh funds, according to Newsom’s statement. Additionally, while CalFresh participants who were already enrolled at the beginning of October received their monthly benefits, November payouts will be affected if the shutdown continues past Oct. 23. Sunny Lee, Associate Vice Chancellor and Dean of Students, and Cruz Grimaldo, Associate Vice Chancellor for the Division of Student Affairs, sent out an email Monday alerting students about the possible change.
