October is Caribbean Heritage Month! To celebrate, we're giving you a sneak preview of a new collection: Fonds 658, the Jayson Perez fonds.
Perez was born in Diego Martin, Trinidad and Tobago and was a talented musician, composer, and educator. In 1991, Perez won a Juno Award for his song 'Soldiers We Are All' in the Reggae/Calypso category, becoming the first and only calypsonian at the time to receive the honor. Perez also co-created Canada’s first non-profit calypso music academy for youth called Pass the Torch. Calypso music reflects the vibrant cultural heritage of the Caribbean and has played a vital role in the region’s social and political expression.
