’Twas the day of the Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade, when all through the East Village, creatures of the canine sort stirred excitedly at ankle level. Among those wizzing by: a tempura Pomeranian, a strawberry dachshund, a petite USPS delivery dog, and a full charcuterie board on four legs.
The 35th annual parade produced a frenzy of spectators so fur-ocious that foot traffic was deadlocked on the sidewalks. At some locations, spectators swarmed past barricades, climbing into the grass against the wishes of private security guards. Spectators stood on fences and private doorsteps just to get a glance at some of the dogs trotting by.
Among the dogs (and their owners) who spoke to Hyperallergic was Martini “Tini” and owner Araceli dressed as Darla and Nemo from “Finding Nemo” (2003). Araceli said this was their first dog parade, as Tini the Chihuhaua had just turned one year old.
