On the Whitney’s fifth-floor terrace, “Hyundai Terrace Commission: Marina Zurkow: The River is a Circle” immerses viewers in the ever-evolving story of the Hudson River and the Meatpacking District, where digital and physical forms converge to illuminate the ecosystem’s layered past alongside imagined futures above and below the water. As Zurkow’s animated work shifts with the hours and seasons, Blake Goble’s architectural accents provide viewers with a tactile, supportive environment to sit, lean, and reflect as they “wander through a sunken forest,” turning the terrace into an extension of the surrounding riverscape, suspended above the city.
