On this Travel Tuesday, #ASUEverywhere heads to the remote Mexican island of El Pardito to catch up with @asu_sfis Assistant Research Professor Jesse Senko and his quest to save sea turtles 🐢 ⁣ ⁣ The problem: Sea #turtles, vital to the health of the world’s oceans, become entangled in fishing nets as bycatch and drown. Jesse Senko (second image, left), with PhD student Janie Reavis (right), has collaborated with teams across #arizonastateuniversity to develop a solution, and one of the places where they are implementing this is the Sea of Cortez, off the coast of Baja California Sur, Mexico, since it's an important habitat for endangered sea turtles.⁣ ⁣ Jesse’s 💡idea was attaching solar-powered lights to fishing nets, and they work by allowing the turtles to see and avoid the nets.
