Today, Council debated my motion on the City’s return-to-office policy. In August, the City Manager announced that all staff would be required to work five days a week in the office starting January 1. I introduced a motion to rescind that plan and keep hybrid work in place. While my motion did not pass, forcing the debate meant this change would not be put in place without scrutiny. Instead, Council adopted a replacement motion, we pushed back against the original plan and made clear that hybrid work will continue for City employees. That’s an important step forward, and one that would not have happened without raising this issue. Hybrid work has shown no negative impact on productivity or value to taxpayers, and there has never been evidence that five days in the office improves outcomes for residents.
