People with disabilities don’t want a handout, we want a fair shot. A system that supports independence, not punishes it. Here’s the thing: many people with disabilities do get jobs. But the moment we earn above a very low threshold, we risk losing the government benefits that cover medical supplies, home care, and adaptive equipment. This isn’t “extra money.” These are essentials that make basic living possible. The other day I told you about the cost of just “peeing”. It was a harsh reality for me once I turned content creation into my real job. Another harsh reality was getting married and losing even more benefits the government provided because our household income “changed”. It’s called the “disability benefits trap.” Instead of supporting independence, the system punishes it. We’re forced to choose between working and losing the care we literally need to survive.
