Imagine having to pay for something as simple as peeing. That’s the reality for many people with a spinal cord injury.
Because the brain and bladder don’t communicate the way they used to, most rely on catheters to fully empty our bladders.
Catheters are not optional, they’re essential. And they’re expensive.
If you don’t have good insurance, the cost adds up quickly. Even with insurance, I still pay out of pocket just to pee.
This is a very broad topic, but simply put, this is the part of SCI that doesn’t make it into the highlight reels. The everyday costs, the hidden struggles, the things most people never think about. But it matters, because awareness isn’t just about ramps and wheelchairs. It’s also about systems, access, and dignity in daily life.
And while I have your attention, please don’t use accessible restrooms if you don’t absolutely need to. That extra space isn’t just “nice to have,” it’s essential for people like me to safely take care of basic needs.
