CEO Elon Musk said during the company’s quarterly earnings call Wednesday that the Austin-area Tesla robotaxis will no longer have a safety moderator riding along by the end of this year. Each vehicle has operated with a person in the front passenger seat as a precaution since the ride-hailing service launched in June. These moderators are there, according to Musk and Tesla, as an “overly cautious” safety measure to assist if the vehicle gets stuck or potentially crashes.
