Nine years ago this weekend I arrived home after being held by Venezuela's intelligence agency for five days. The SEBIN, continues to function as Venezuela secret police, locking up without due process anyone deemed an enemy of the state: opposing politicians, doctors, journalists - anyone who expressed a sliver of dissent. The person who sent me this mug shot, and who fled the country years ago, is partially responsible for my release. Our small team, there to report on the spiraling medical crisis there brought in by the regime's pillaging, was held in a black site. The other members were released on day 4. But on the fifth day I was transferred to Caracas. As I was being held, handcuffed in this person's office, we started talking.
