Memphis Educators Say Hispanic Students Are Scared to Come to School

Memphis teachers are raising alarms: Hispanic students are coming to school distressed, distracted — or not coming at all — after the recent surge of federal immigration enforcement in the city.
Nearly 1 in 5 MSCS students is Hispanic, a number that has almost doubled in the last decade. But now, some classrooms are emptier, and students are visibly afraid.
Educators say families fear being stopped or detained on the way to school. One teacher shared that a parent completely withdrew their child and said they may have to leave Memphis. Another teacher spent hours crying with a student after two family members were detained.
Even though MSCS leaders say there’s no sharp drop in attendance yet, teachers are seeing the impact daily. Some kids don’t want to leave home. Others are anxious all day thinking about whether their parents will be there when they get back.
