The Alameda County Board of Supervisors approved a $10 million investment in food security funds Tuesday morning, set to go toward food distribution across the county following cuts by President Donald Trump’s administration and the federal government shutdown.
First presented to the board Oct. 21, Alameda County Supervisor Nikki Fortunato Bas proposed $8.3 million toward the Alameda County Food Bank along with partner organizations, as well as $1.7 million in food assistance for senior residents, according to a press release from the board of supervisors’ office.
“Food is a basic human right. Nobody should go hungry, especially our most vulnerable populations, including children, seniors, immigrants, families and the medically frail,” Fortunato Bas said in the press release.
