On Friday, the University of California publicly released the $1.2 billion settlement proposal document that the U.S. Department of Justice, or DOJ, sent to UCLA on Aug. 8. This comes as a result of a lawsuit that the UCLA Faculty Association and the Council of University of California Faculty Associations filed against the Regents of the University of California on Sept. 17. After the UC system denied the UCLA Faculty Association’s requests for public disclosure of the settlement document, the associations filed a petition for writ of mandate under the California Public Records Act, which affirms that public access to government information is a constitutional right. While the university argued that the settlement document is exempt under various provisions of the California Government Code relating to pending litigation, confidentiality, drafts and public interest, on Oct. 14, the Alameda County Superior Court found these arguments to be unsupported.
