Footage from inside the Sangster International Airport (MBJ) in Montego Bay shows severe water leaks, missing ceiling panels, and rain flooding parts of the departure lounge, after Hurricane Melissa tore through western Jamaica earlier today.
The Category 5 system made landfall in St Elizabeth shortly after 11:00 a.m., leaving widespread destruction across St James, Westmoreland, and Manchester.
Transport Minister Daryl Vaz says there is no immediate timeline for the reopening of the Sangster International Airport, while the Norman Manley International Airport (NMIA) in Kingston could reopen by Thursday following inspection and cleanup.
As of Tuesday evening (October 28), Melissa has weakened to Category 3 strength with winds near 127 mph, but is expected to regain intensity and reach Category 4 before making landfall in Cuba tomorrow, according to forecasters.
