“In the end, we feel like we built a sculpture, not a house,” says thirteenth-generation Mainer Carisa Salerno, who, with her artist husband Aaron Levin, bought this 1969 cabin on a small island off the coast of Maine. The house had been sitting on the market for over two years and was in rough shape with mushrooms sprouting from interior walls and frayed wiring. But Carisa and Aaron, who run themaineantiquehunt and themainehousehunt, sensed something special about the home. “My dad is a carpenter and home inspector, and initially he told us not to buy it,” recalls Carisa. “But my dad also always says, ‘anything can be saved.’” Soon, with the help of aforementioned father, Rick Salerno, and uncles, cousins, and a few friends, Carissa and Aaron found themselves knee-deep in a seven-year-long, down-to-the-studs remodel. And now, after the tumultuous journey, the couple finally get to sit back and enjoy. Step inside for yourself at the link in our bio.
