It’s pretty difficult to imagine a better place to retire than this home. In California’s idyllic Sea Ranch community, San Francisco-based firm mdastudios designed a sun-soaked getaway that cleaves close to the spirit of the local, barn-like vernacular while adding a refreshing, modern twist. Clad in vertical planks of cedar, the 1,800-square-foot residence comprises two wings thoughtfully arranged for optimized views of the raw Californian coast with minimal site disturbance. The low-maintenance material palette and single floor residence—with the exception of a second bedroom upstairs—was designed with age and accessibility in mind, as the space will one day be the retirement home for a San Francisco couple. “The final result is an understated industrial coastal aesthetic that plays harmoniously with the surrounding natural elements, satisfying the clients’ desire for a bit of respite,” explain the architects.
