Smoky ruins greeted people arriving downtown for work on May 9, 1977. An early morning fire broke out in buildings being demolished around Bay and Louisa Streets as part of the construction for the Eaton’s Centre. Over 100 firefighters successfully saved the downtown core as well as Old City Hall, the partially completed Eaton’s Centre and Holy Trinity Church from the flames. Learn more about the demolition for the Eaton’s Centre at the Toronto Archives’ exhibit “Under the Wrecking Ball: Shaping Toronto’s Downtown 1960-1989”. 1.
