In 2024 the U.S. Bureau of Land Management rejected plans to bulldoze a four-lane highway through the beloved Red Cliffs National Conservation Area in southwest Utah — a place that’s protected for the northernmost population of threatened Mojave desert tortoises. Now the Trump administration is trying to bring this destructive highway-development plan back to life. Congress created Red Cliffs National Conservation Area in 2009 to recognize its spectacular landscape of sculpted red-rock canyons and arches — rich in cultural resources and world-class hiking trails — and its importance to the survival of Mojave desert tortoises. These ancient reptiles are already declining, and carving a new highway through the middle of their home will hasten their demise.
