Top Iowa Republicans in Congress are calling on the Trump administration to take steps to restore access to foreign soybean markets as farmers fret over a worsening trade standoff with China.
U.S. Rep. Zach Nunn, who represents south-central Iowa's 3rd Congressional District, and U.S. Sen. Joni Ernst sent a letter on Monday, Oct. 27, to members of President Donald Trump's cabinet calling for coordinated action to strengthen domestic demand and suspend or remove retaliatory tariffs that are "distorting global competition."
Their letters come after Iowa farmers have aired frustrations over Trump's announcement of a $20 billion U.S. bailout for Argentina aimed at stabilizing its financial markets, while China has increasingly turned to the South American country to buy soybeans amid the trade dispute with the U.S.
