Courtney Petersen's husband was watching her location. The moving icon marking her cycling spot stopped at an infamous intersection along Iowa’s famed High Trestle Trail. He tried calling. No answer. Cell phone service does cut out along the trail, he remembers justifying to himself. Thirty minutes later, he arrived at a tragic scene. Petersen was hit by a cement dump truck while crossing the intersection at Northwest 44th Street on her recumbent bicycle Oct. 9. She was killed instantly. A 44-year-old Marine Corps sergeant and a paralyzed veteran, Petersen, whom friends and loved ones called Corey, had completed marathons all over the globe, from Berlin to Miami, on a handcycle. She was an avid cyclist, moving from Phoenix to Ankeny last year to be close to the 25-mile trail that takes riders through five central Iowa communities.
