The majority of Jamaicans are going into Tuesday night without electricity amid widespread flooding, downed utility poles, and blocked roads caused by Hurricane Melissa.
Local Government Minister Desmond McKenzie said at a Tuesday evening news conference that up to 4 p.m., more than 530,000 customers - about 77 per cent of the Jamaica Public Service customer base — were without power.
He said restoration work is under way, with priority being given to hospitals and water pumping stations to maintain critical services.
