🦌 Once roaming freely across Patagonia, Huemul Deer, Chile’s national symbol, now numbers fewer than 1,500 in the wild, a 99% decline in its historic population.
But hope is returning to the Andes!
Last week, Re:wild partner rewildingchile, an offspring organization of tompkins_conservation, launched the world’s first Huemul Rescue and Rehabilitation Center, a vital step toward recovery for one of the world’s most threatened mammals.
Located beside Cerro Castillo National Park, where 10% of the remaining population lives, the center will treat injuries from road accidents and dog attacks, address diseases transmitted by livestock, and release healthy individuals back into the wild.
This milestone is part of the broader effort to create the Huemul Corridor, a large-scale conservation strategy reconnecting Huemul populations across the southern Andes, in collaboration with Chile’s ministry of agriculture, conaf_minagri, and sagchile.
