Meet the woman bringing cosmetology school to prisons… “Who gets a second chance?” Christie Luther has lived the question and answered it with action. After serving time at Oklahoma’s Mabel Bassett Correctional Center, losing her children, marriage, and life as she knew it, she discovered a path forward through cosmetology. What began as Christie’s second chance became a blueprint for others. R.I.S.E. Program Inc.—Oklahoma’s first licensed cosmetology and barber school inside a women’s prison—does more than teach a trade. It reduces re-offending by restoring dignity, creating opportunity, and offering mentorship that lasts beyond release. Out of 180 graduates, only one has returned to prison.
