This week's #workoftheWeek is Étang de Robi Tervuren by Joseph Théodore Coosemans. The piece features a pond at the Robiano Castle in Tervuren, Belgium. This painting is located in McMullen's Belgian landscapes exhibit on the 2nd floor so make sure to come visit it in person! By utilizing rich oil-based paints, Coosemans depicted the calm scene of a man sitting over a pond fishing, accompanied by a woman by his side, as well as a cool landscape. On the opposite side of the path lies a sheep and a lamb. Coosemans belonged to a group of Belgian artists who attended the School of Tervuren. Focused on the natural essence of forests and fields by Brussels, these artists highlighted the true beauty and human connection to the natural world amid a time of rapid industrialization and urban life in the second half of the 19th century.
