Bats are difficult to study for many reasons, one of which is that we can’t hear most of the sounds they make. Bats navigate and hunt using echolocation calls that are above the frequency range of human hearing. To help us better understand bats, we record these calls using specialized equipment and study the resulting spectrograms 🦇 But how do we study bats across Ontario without having to travel all over the province? This is where Community Science comes in! Over the last two years, your Toronto Zoo’s Field Conservation team has run the Backyard Bat Acoustic Monitoring project, allowing Zoo staff to set up monitors at their own homes, cottages, apartments, and more. We received 52,708 observations of all eight bat species from across 82 sites, far beyond what the bat team could collect alone.
