Sometimes, bats need a little extra help 🦇 As we continue to celebrate #BatWeek, we look back to 2023 when our Field Conservation team at your Toronto Zoo collaborated with our partners at the Maitland Valley Conservation Authority to build a bat “condo.” This bat condo was constructed for a colony of little brown myotis bats, which are an endangered species in Ontario. The condo may look a little bit different than you would expect – it’s like a small house on stilts 🏠 Inside the condo are tightly-packed plywood sheets, where bats squeeze into the spaces between to rest (or “roost”) during the day. The colony of bats living in this condo is entirely made up of female bats, and is referred to as a “maternity colony”! These ladies use the condo as a safe space for giving birth and raising their pups.
