It’s been a month to the day since I visited Auschwitz for the first time. I’m still not sure what to think about it. I agonized for hours over what equipment to bring. I wanted to capture the perfect image, but it was also extremely hot that day. After being there for about 30 seconds, I realized I should have left it all at home. What picture could I take that could come close to capturing the reality, the horror of what happened there? I saw some truly sickening things, images which have been burned into my mind forever. Most tourists didn’t seem to share the sentiment. People were taking pictures at every chance, even posing and taking smiling selfies. It ruined the atmosphere of reflection—my disgust at this behavior was the only thing that saved me from being overwhelmed by the horror of it all.
