Revisiting some of our collaborative work with Cheyenne-Arapaho artist and advocate, Edgar Heap of Birds. Along with Edgar Heap of Birds, Kindred Studio k1ndredstudio + Project Backboard project_backboard + Common Practice acommonpractice partnered with MoMAPS1 to refurbish and repaint the Murray Park basketball courts in Long Island City, Queens, NYC. With generous support from 5starbasketball, the day was met with a land acknowledgement presented by members of the Shinnecock Nation, along with a drum circle, dance performance, and open run on the basketball courts. Dominic Tiger-Cortes, founder of hoopmedicine , led a youth basketball training program on court, while Tecumseh Caesar nativetec offered a jewelry making workshop at PS1 for local kids and adults alike. This permanent installation at Murray Park includes two works from Heap of Birds’ “Neuf” series painted directly on the surface of the basketball courts.
