Another year of inaction for marine conservation in the Southern Ocean. The countries entrusted to protect Antarctica’s wildlife continue to fail to overcome political and commercial interests — while Antarctica warms three times faster than anywhere else on the planet and wildlife extraction threatens to disrupt the ecosystem. Two weeks’ worth of discussions at the annual meeting for the Convention for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) in Tasmania, have concluded and once again failed to deliver meaningful conservation progress for Antarctica’s wildlife. Antarctic krill fishing by a handful of countries is threatening the foundation of the ecosystem: krill, a species that is relied upon by whales, penguins, seabirds, and seals. Norway takes the vast majority of the krill. One Norwegian company is responsible for around two-thirds of all the krill caught, and still, that’s not enough. It’s this drive to profit from the extraction of Antarctica’s wildlife...
