Why can’t chickens eat avocado or chocolate? 🍫 chocolate contains caffeine and theobromine. chickens lack the enzymes needed to break these chemicals down so if they ingest some buildup in their system, which can cause heart attacks, nervous system, breakdowns, and digestive stress. 🥑 Technically avocado flesh is ok for chickens (although I still don’t recommend it) but the peel pit and unripe flesh is full of persin, a fungicidal toxin that’s used to protect the avocado from pest and disease. It’s safe for humans to ingest in small amounts, but even a little bit for birds can cause respiratory issues and heart attacks, which often kill the bird within 24 hours.
