The DPRK announced on Wednesday that it had test-fired sea-to-surface cruise missiles in the Yellow Sea, just days before U.S. President Donald Trump’s scheduled visit to ROK for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) leaders’ meeting.
According to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), the modified ship-based cruise missiles were fired vertically and flew for more than 7,800 seconds along a pre-set route before striking their target. No details were provided about the missiles’ range or specifications.
DPRK leader Kim Jong Un did not attend the launch. The test was overseen by Pak Jong-chon, vice chairman of the Central Military Commission, who said the country had made “significant progress” in putting its nuclear forces on a practical basis. He described the test as part of the DPRK’s ongoing effort to strengthen its nuclear deterrent and ensure the reliability of its strategic weapons.
This was the DPRK’s first cruise missile test in five months.
